20240506 Wrong Guesstimation

Remember the previous post I did about guesswork by placing the PCB on top of an image of the shape? Well, this time, it did not work if what I discover is true. This is because after I had located the stl extension for the obsolete Sketchup Make 2017, I was able to import 3d .stl models into the software. And after making some virtual measurements, I realised the position of the Cyclotron LEDs were way off.

I was not happy with that and at that time, I was so excited that I dismissed the thought why a circle could not line up with the four LEDs. Instead, my mind just say, “Why not just create a few curves until all the LEDs fit?”. The reason it did not fit was because they are not supposed to. But that was not the reason why I felt uneasy.

See the circled dashes? It was made up of three separate curves. The design on the left (Ver 003) was using the guessing method while the one on the right (Ver 004) was through virtual measuring of the 3D model.

Because the next step was to supposed to get the Proton Pack’s 3D file printed and then, print out the PCB design on paper and do a mock up. Somehow, I got over-confident and skipped that step and went right ahead with the PCB production via JLCPCB. I am going to get the 3D print soon and if Ver 004 matches, this means, I have wasted time and money creating Ver 003 PCB. This could be also my impatience to try out the 4-position SMD slide switch which allows the microcontroller to select different lighting sequence.

Using SKetchUp (the only 3D software I know apart from the 1990’s VistaPro) I more or less got the measurement for the four LEDs. The Dimension Tool, has an accuracy to the nearest millimeter.

Where to get what:

The 1/6th Proton Pack from TheNewHobbyist as used by Adam Savage

The Remixed Version of the above for Lighting by biho1

The simplified GB Wand by roadie3rd (but needs scaling to 8cm and has extended barrel)

The Ghostbusters Proton Pack Gun by Jace1969 (you need to mirror it and scale to 8cm. I’m using this)

The Alice Frame by biho1

Proton Pack Labels by HProps
