1/20 Polar Bear

This is the first time I have completed a 1/20 ma.k Fighting Suit. Technically.

It was part of a bigger plan to portray him as a Space Assassin, using an electro-magnetic rifle and almost limitless Solar Cells to power the whole system and life support. You could practically put the Space Assassin up in Space and leave them alone for months at a time.

However, when the Pandemic struck, this was one of the projects that kept me busy for awhile. Ultimately, when it was almost completed, I lost interest in the figure as I was starting to worry about the future or when the next meal would come.

Luna Pawn vs Polar Bear

I find myself veering towards the ma.k streak this time of year while doing some private projects. I can’t, for the life of me, tell the difference between the Luna Pawn and the Polar Bear.

I used to have a friend who filled my head a lot of the ma.k facts until I overloaded and lashed out. Now I’m slowly digesting them and well, yeah, all of a sudden, these actually look good but I still have my reservations with those helicopter bodied Gustavs.

Thanks to my supplier, I got a very good price on a replacement OEM side mirror (which was smashed one early morning due to some driver) and another vendor who sprayed it for me literally for free.

So I have more than enough for a Luna Pawn. But alas, this time, only the Polar Bear was left. Still, they looked the same to me…

A friend once told me that it is fun to apply glue to both parts, let it melt briefly and then clamp them shut as tight as you can. You will see the melted plastic being squeezed out. After letting the plastic harden, take a blade and scrape it off.

What was most therapeutic for me was when I took the sandpaper/sponge and slowly grind the excess in a circular way, while letting John Wick 2 play in the background. It was fun, until some gaps appeared and you’d have to putty over them.

Well, it is done. There is nothing to write about the building process. But because I wanted to have a Space themed suit, the Polar Bear will be painted White with minimal weathering since in Space, there is no environment to rust the suit nor make it look really dirty aka extremely weathered.

One thing I realised is that the Polar Bear has only one free hand as the other is a weapons arm.

And yeah, the head. I was hoping for a Caucasian or even an Asian head but guess I have to make do with what I have. Of course I can search for a better replacement but then again, I am hopeless with figure painting, so I am not going to spend so much effort to find one and then screw it up even more with bad painting.

Maybe I will put a LED inside to light up his serious looking face but I’ll also have to improve on painting his eyes which is like him staring daggers at you.

Although I liked the Movie, ‘The Edge of Tomorrow’, this is not Rita Vrataski aka The Angel of Verdun.

But right now, this is the finished suit until I get inspirations on how to make a nice electro-magnetic rifle. Yeah, I want to put LEDs inside it, which makes it more complicated.

Tamiya Panel Line problems

Well, Sen Lim was right about Tamiya Panel Line attacking plastics. At first it was only the Bandai ones but now, so is Wave’s. Maybe I should switch over to Tamiya acrylics out try out GSI’s Mr. Weathering series…

This was the last image of the suit before I kept it away. It is not that I do not like ma.K suits but I just lost interest all of a sudden. With the Pandemic, our movement is restricted, we are not sure when to open the Workshop, with it’s opening times which keep changing due to the Authorities announcements and so, the Customers are not coming. Plus, I cannot visit any shops nor get stuff delivered.

They were done using a single light from a LED flashlight shone from above and reflected onto a used towel. Yeah, I was about to go to sleep…
