015: FALKE ENGINE DETAILING

DETAILING THE ENGINE

The Engine (in the earlier articles) has been pushed out by a few millimeters for the USB adaptor and then painted. Now, it needs to be modified so that the original related parts can still fit in the new position. This means drilling new position holes.

I drilled out another set of new holes for the parts E6 and E7. Their original holes were about 3 to 4mm away. As I need these two parts to be hooking up to the engine, I have to drill out the new holes for them. Hand-drilling is the order of the day and reduces any risk of the bit jumping and scratching the paints. Every once in a while, you’d need to clear the dill bit of the excess plastics though.

LEFT
The next part is D18 (in grey) which I call it the ‘Y’ pipe, whose mounting holes in the engine has been moved as well. After drilling the new holes, I also added an additional pair of new holes to mount the two piping.

RIGHT
The position of this part is crucial as not only does it need to fit into the engine’s new position but also to make sure the USB connector does not disturb it. I left out the other parts since extending the engine by a few mm means re-drilling a lot more holes for these fragile parts.
For this exhaust part, I hand-painted it with Mr. Color #28 Steel. Before it has the chance to dry, I dipped my brush into the paint a little and stipple it. With the raised surface, I use both Abteilung Oils to give it a rusty look. I did the same with the earlier two pipes but used Abteilung Light Rust instead.

The ‘Y’ pipe now looks quite corroded. Since I am using the Abteilung Oils straight, I had to leave it to dry for a few days and had to stop myself from meddling with it every now and then. The oils allows for very nice mixture and you can play with it as long as you want. Because of the long drying time, I have to make sure the model does not have any fingerprints on the oils. No matter how I left it alone, my fingerprints are there plus some other unintentional oil wipes.

We’re almost there and so, in the next chapter, let’s give the Falke some fighting chance!
