When you open the flap of a TNG, Voyager Tricorder, the unmistakable ratchet sound is there. But there is no such sound on the real props because they added in the sound effect during post-production. Still, that did not stop a lot of people from adding the sound into their Tricorders. If you are going to have the worbling sound on your Tricorder, the ratcheting must also be there. So, it was very sad when I got my Playmates MkVII decades ago and realise that the ratcheting sound does not exist.
MAKING MY OWN RATCHET
I got the Star Trek: NEMESIS CD as soon as it came out onto the shelves in Malaysia. This is the very first time that they have included high quality sound effects from the Movie. Sounds such as Phase firing, Commbadge chirping and in my case, a full 30 seconds of Tricorder worbling . I wished there were more because the Tricorder ratcheting sound effect was not there. So, I decided to make my own.
Stupid as it sounds, I should have done this long ago. I work in a Company that Services cars and so, it should have some choice ratchets. It would be much better than going to hardware stores and trying every one that is in sight.
With a couple of samples in the Phone, and once I have chosen the best, ‘Opening’ and ‘Closing’, I am going to put them into the MP3 player module and well, hope for the best.
