THE PROGRESS SO FAR

It’s been more than 3 years since I last worked on the lighting system for the Spinner. It’s not the electronics which stalled the project but rather, the backwall. Year before that, I was detailing the backwall and had butchered and transplanted the middle details to a new template. The template was traced out from Paragrafix aka Paul Bodensiek’s PE set. Somehow, through the years, I lost that part somewhere in my Works room.

THE JOURNEY TODAY

Until now, I could not find it and the recreated part was really horrible. So, yeah, disheartened, I put the project on hold. Getting another copy of the model proved to be very expensive as it was out of production for years. But just a few days ago, it seems that Fujimi has released the model again. And so, this kinda fired up my enthusiasm. I really wanted to have a fully lit Spinner anytime soon.

It was on the 1st of February that I saw this image on CKTan’s Plamodel Shop. I bought it immediately and with a great discount, the price was quite reasonable.
The Spinner arrived in a few days. And just two days ago, HLJ.com has set up an order page for the kit:

Update 16.02.2023
OK, so after I ordered some, they are now gone.
This was the original circuit diagram which I had finalised in 2018 or so. There were about more than 60LEDs and I had to use three microcontrollers to produce the different lighting effects. I could have ‘synchronized’ all the LEDs but it would look so robotic. The motors in each of the revolving lights and flip-flops were analogue which gives that slightly out of sync effect.
At this time, the main board took a long time as I did not not know how to use the auto-router. So, all the tracks you see are me painstakingly arranging them one by one…
Re-visiting the same circuit now, and using the auto-router, I kinda noped.
Just look at the amount of components I have to re-position all over again!

This board is the first version and during the soldering, it needed some re-positioning and stuff but since I lost the notes, I’ll redo them again when I solder the second board. When I ordered from JLCPCB at that time, the minimum quantity was 5 pieces. In 2023, it still is.
For today, I got out the digital calipers and took measurements on the front mandibles. I wanted to create a PCB from them so that the user does need to tread so many wires (OK, six) but only two. Once I got this beat, I’ll print them out on a laser printer and see if the measurements are correct.
[2025] The PCB has been redesigned.

HOW MANY AGAIN?

The Spinner is not a simple single PCB project but rather, it requires about six circuit boards:

  • 1x Main control Board (Done)
  • 2x Front Mandibles (WIP)
  • 1x Front Light bar (WIP)
  • 1x Top Siren (WIP)
  • 1x Top Siren Bar

TO THE FISH MARKET?

So, the question bothering me now is, will I release them? I am not sure right now. The Spinner kit was sold out in two days at HLJ and not many do have this kit. So, if I do release them, they might be gathering dust on the shelves.

Not only that there are a lot of wiring inside the kit and it is very easy to get ‘lost’. So, this would also mean I might have to do a very detailed assembly manual. Not an easy task as I am juggling between unstable jobs and feeling lazier and I age…

UPDATE: 08.02.2023

Whelp, the Spinner is back again and for a limited time there is a 15% off shipping too. Better grab them before it’s gone again: https://www.hlj.com/1-24-scale-spinner-fuj09132
