20230408 An evening with Mr. Kam

Let me introduce you to the owner of GG Hobby; Mr. Kam Zhuo Yi. He has been involved with the business for more than 5 years and now, and for the past one year, he has been going it alone. His very own shop is located in Desa Aman Puri which is literally the other opposite end of Kepong. If it wasn’t for my search with Mr. Color’s Super Metallic Paints, I would not even know that his shop existed. Getting to his place from my Work is quite a ‘long’ journey. Because this was a weekend, it I was able to make it work, giving me more time before the shop closes at 8pm. However, if I were to make the journey on a normal day, the various evening traffic jams in every possible route would have killed off any intentions for my going there as a normal 40 minute trip can stretch to more than an hour.

The bright and clean GG Hobby stocks a lot of figurines, Nendoroids, Gunpla, cars, 1/12 weapons and even some Gashapons at a very affordable price. At one time, I was nearly temped with those 1/12 30mm Sisters (ahem). For this evening, the main attraction for me was a particular paint. Since the shop is relatively unknown, I was lucky to get them as which were not in production anymore.

THE All-IN-ONE MR. KAM

One thing about having your own business is that you’re going to be that one person who needs to do everything. In most Anime events, Mr, Kam was the driver, the mover, the stockist, the cashier, the salesperson, etc. If you must call it, he is definitely a one-man show. Imagine carrying the mountain of inventories, display racks and especially the Gashapon machines from his third floor shop, all the way to the Event. And, still be ready for the next Business day after that. It is very tiring and despite all this, you can see his eyes lit up with passion when he starts talking about GG Hobby and scale models.

THE FUTURE OF GG HOBBY?

We did discuss a lot of issues concerning the Scale Modeling Hobby scene where the younger Generations are concerned and it is best to hear it from the man himself. Mr. Kam does acknowledge the ‘remoteness’ of his shop but he is contend as he has solved some of the major issues that besiege normal establishments. His only worries are the problems of bringing in more products for his ever growing customer base.

But before you go rushing there, do note that the shop is closed on Mondays. And the same can be said on some occasions or he might have an emergency. So, do check up on his Facebook status first. And one more thing, if you do not have cash, GG Hobby can only accept e-Wallets and QR Pay for the time being.

DINNER

By the time I reach the other end of Kepong, it was too late to go to CKTan since they were minutes away from closing. And with everyone away for their own dinner, it was a great opportunity for me to enjoy another Ramly’s takeaway. Despite the Fasting month, the usual booth was still open and so, a nice juicy burger ended a very good day.

This guy is preparing for five portions where mine (being packed on the right) is THE ‘Special’ and costs RM8.00
