I had a closer look at the parts in runners ‘Fe’. This is the runner which represents the boxes, bottles and other stuff for the Mini Shop. There are six of these runners so you’re more or less going to have quite a bit of extra parts leftover, depending on how you want to set up your Mini Shop. When I looked closely at the ‘boxes’, the cubes are not exactly cubes as the top tapers inwards slightly. They might look OK but for me, it is a good excuse to make my own since I already have the C-Rations PDF file.

After I have measuring the dimensions for each box, I drafted the folding template using the opensource InkScape software. These folding templates will be the basis for representing the different boxes in the kit. From the single slit pattern at the top of each ‘box’, I kind of guessed how they folded. Since its a 80gsm paper, I am quite confident it is not necessary to allow for folding and cutting tolerances.

The template (yellow) is quite similar to what I compared with on the Internet. I was quite surprised as this was my first time doing it by imagining how the boxes folded. Also, I might need to find or make a sharp flat tool to help in the folding of these boxes. How I wished I had a Cricut cutter which helps cut out the shapes…
I managed to cram as much boxes as I can onto an A4 sheet. I borrowed the brown texture from flakmonkey’s design just to see how it would look like when printed onto actual stiff brown paper. The outlines are about 0.20mm which to me, was OK compared to the thick 0.50mm which looked quite vulgar.

Folding Boxes

I am not sure what is happening but I kinda seem to fumble with these small paper stuff. Maybe I am getting old. Anyway, using a blade, I got some of the boxes cut out. To make them folding a little easier, I drew folding lines hard behind the actual fold of each box using a ball point pen. For a 70gsm paper, this helped in getting an exact fold line since they’re so thin. But for the stiffer brown paper, I think I might need to use a blunt needle or something in 02.mm in diameter or thereabouts.

The normal 70gsm photo copy paper is very soft and is almost unmanageable when it is wet with the white glue. Hopefully, the stiffer brown paper might help. I folded the smaller box wrongly and I did not realise it until I compared them to the actual model kit part.

The folded paper boxes looked and felt marginally bigger then the plastic part. But they still fit into the shelves without any problem. I would need to cut them out carefully and also, wait for the glue to dry before going to the next flap. Hopefully, this would prevent issues such as bent boxes and out of alignment flaps.
