So, who has not heard of Major Makoto Kusanagi? Anyone?
How about Ghost in the Shell? No?
How about Scarlet Johansson playing her in the live-movie version? Really?
Anyway, let’s get to the point. There is a 3D file for a Makoto Kusanagi figure, dressed in the live-action movie costume. What interests me was her side-weapon and her hair. Whether it resembles Ms. Johansson, is another matter. However, in order to get that file, you’d need to be a Patreon Member of MCM3D.
The Problem with 3D Files
Like any data nowadays, once you release it into the Internet, you cannot get it back nor control who can use it. And 3D files are no different. Once it is in someone’s hands, there is no way to regulate how it would be used. For example, I get a 3D file which states that I can only use it for Personal consumption. Really?
There is no one to monitor what you can or cannot do with the 3D File nor stop it from being copied. So, potentially, the owner of the file can re-sell it or even, modify it to the point of it being different from the original file. That is, if you, the perpetrator is hardworking enough. Just like resin recasts, the Sculptor would have put in some ‘tells’ to identify their work. Then again, as ridiculous as it seems, this can turn in to a case where a Thief, having made a replica of an original, claims that another Thief has stolen their work and they have the proof (tells) to show it. And what would that achieve? Would the other thief stop or ‘asked’ to compensate for stealing the work of a stolen work?
So, yeah.
In case you needed to know
I just saw 1 Chinese B2C Platform advertising the File for a quarter. That is USD0.25 cents to you. Compare that with the USD20 per month Patreon fee, the difference is staggering. And remember, I doubt Kodansha would be so kind as to license out the GITS IP to a single 3D artist…
