20261010 A revisit to dinoi’s MkVII Tricorder

The Doctor said my Fever was due to the hemotoma on my swollen left leg and it was not Gout. I am thankful for that but the symptoms were quite similar which led me self-medicate in error. Since I could not go anywhere or be effective in the Office, I decided to just dig up some electronics to play around with. One of them was the prototype I designed for dinoi’s MkVII Tricorder which I downloaded from thingiverse. Like most STNG electronics, I wanted to keep this as simple was I can without using any microcontrollers. By putting in a switch and also a variable resistor, it does give some customisation options, just like the TR-595e.

Dino Ignacio’s MkVII

Despite not knowing any 3D (apart from SketchUp), I found some very nice 3D Tricorder files on Thingiverse. One of them was from Dinoi whose files were to allow you to print a hollow MkVII Tricorder in preparation for the PropEFX’s electronics. Once I saw the video where he is collaborating with others, I more or less eased off on the development of my own version of the electronics. Almost four years have passed and there was not much news about the development. The PropEFX products have also stopped being sold. I was hoping for more news about this development because, if it became a reality, this MkVII Tricorder would be so cool.

The Videos

This was also another opportunity for me to make a video of the prototype electronics and examine the 3D print in better detail. Anyhow, from what I saw in the 3D design, this Tricorder could open up more possibilities for customization. That is, if I knew how to use 3D software. There is a quicker but more expensive way, which is to engage someone with the 3D skills to do what I want.

This 40-minute long video shows how Dino builds his 3D printed MkVII Tricorder.
This is the Dino’s and PropEFX’s Tricorder which has animated screen and some controls.
This is poor old me exploring Dino’s 3D file printed by JLCPCB (aka JLC3DP) and my own electronics.
