I had to stop here knowing that the Episode will be focusing on him being Human and all. How I wished I was wrong.
Here, let me complete Spock’s sentence for you: What the F*ck.
For a Movie philistine like me, this episode can be considered quite cringy. In a nutshell, we have a Vulcan suddenly becoming Human, who now has to do Vulcan things to impress his future Vulcan Mother in Law. So, the rest of the show focuses on him experiencing what he has always been suppressing and learning how to be a Vulcan again. I would have abandoned this series like Discovery if not for Anson Mount (Captain Pike) and Jess Bush (Nurse Chapel).
It took me a few days to come back and continue with the episode. What I hated was the notion that the stereotype ugly Mother in Law does exist, even in other Civilization and on the 23rd Century. That b*tch face, the spineless hen-pecked Husband, everyone walking on broken glass and trying to impress her. It’s all there. Can I call it lazy writing or do the writers need to use these recognisable traits to tell the audience?
Still, there are some great moments such as Spock moving the Shuttle’s force field to protect Nurse Chapel, the Alien Customer Service, Spock being proud of Amanda and yes, the 60 minute deadline where everything wraps up easy peasy and I can close the show. And oh, nice haircut for human Spock and Captain Pike’s comedic timing with the tevmel.
