I have forgotten to post about the second ratchet experiment which happened three weeks ago. I had to do this after hours when there are no one about. It is quite exhausting to tell everyone what I am doing and I need almost total silence. I am using my Huawei P10 Plus for these recordings.
During the first time, the sounds were nice but I did more than four ratchet clicks. Opening the flap is then too ‘noisy’.
Anyway, for this second round, I have selected another three ratchets. They sound much better than the first selection, Despite my efforts, I can only get it down to five clicks. I try to make the sounds a little different by changing the speed of the spin. For example, when you open the flap, the sound starts off slow and then picks up in the end. The reverse is the same when you close the flap.
But in the end, they both almost sound the same. Ha ha ha.
THE RATCHETS
I have recorded the three different types of ratchets and they have different results.
THE LEFT RATCHET
The sound is nice but quite muted. Because I held it too close to the mic and table, it sounded more like knuckles cracking.
THE MIDDLE RATCHET
This ratchet produced the best sound of all. The clicks has that solid (and slightly echoey?) sound.
THE RIGHT RATCHET
OK, this one is nice but it is a backup. The sound is crisp and almost too strong.
