20240625 Running out of space

It’s exactly one month since we’ve moved in and I feel that I am still in a dream. Or a nightmare, depending on which leg I am standing on. Officially, I now have a Works Room or to others more familiar with the term, a Man-Cave of sorts.

Space no’ enuf

The room is roughly 2.5m x 2.75m which gives me about 675 square metres, give or take. With the metal cabinet, two boltless rack, one table, and boxes and boxes of unopened boxes, the Man-Cave is starting to feel cramped. Although my movement is limited, the new situation forces me to re-think on how I proceed with my projects.

My workspace is largely dependent on the 2′ x 4′ table, which more than 2/3 space has been taken up by the PC, Laptop and table fan (yes, there is no fan nor A/C in there). Since I can only do one activity at a time unlike in the former place where I can solder stuff and then, when I need to airbrush the model quickly, I just spread some newspapers over the whole mess. Now, if I need to solder/program things, I would take the tools out from its storage box. Next, if I need to airbrush stuff, I would have to clean up the previous soldering/ programming tools first and so on.

Multiplying Multiples

Granted I’ve been always been buying model kits here and there but because of us living in two different locations (now three) in the past, they were squirrelled away in different locations. Once I start to ‘consolidate’ them all into our new House, I began to notice a the starting of a very big problem; for the last two decades, I have been buying multiple copies of the same model kit.

As expected, there were many, “What the f… was I thinking?” or something similar moments when I start to open up each box for stacking. Then, it all came back to me. Most of these kits were me buying them off friends and/or helping out shops during some ‘no-shows’ when they arrived. There was one or two models which was a forced purchase but that story’s for another time.

Maybe I can sell off the excess stuff since I do not think I can even complete a fraction of them in my lifetime. You might not be able to see most of them clearly since this is a panoramic image where they tend to blur during close-ups. Somewhere in there, is a 2022 Haslab Ghostbusters Proton Pack which I have yet to open. Trust me, its there. And hidden in the right corner between the two shelves would be the huge 1/48 Trumpeteer DKM U-Boat Type VIIC U-552 06801

The Solution

Begrudgingly, I have to agree with my Wife that it is better to sell off some of my Stuff to make space. And looking at the situation in the long run, even if I could finish (as if) a model a year, this would take me a few lifetimes to achieve the goal. My worry is that most of the models might not pique any interest since they’re mostly Sci-Fi and maybe, meant for scratch-building. So, sometime in the near future, you might see me sitting at a bazzar hocking off my stuff. But I’m not going to do any shipping since I cannot foresee myself doing it.

The alternative is to leave it with my kids and let them settle the problem. And maybe, if I know my girls, one of them would start to research over the Internet for the best price and taking its possible rarity into account, will raise the prices to make some cry. There were no jokes about how much I got them since my Wife never did ask. She does know I buy stuff (hence I always do not have rolling cash) and just rolls her eyes…
