20260719 Hand soldering a SSOP chip

What a weekend! It was almost over before I can even start. If you’re wondering hat the hoo-haa is all about, let me tell you about it.

In just last week or so, the Circuit Boards, the components and more importantly, the Microchip PIC microcontroller had arrived. This means I can start the soldering before moving onto the software part. The task is quite challenging because this time, I am using even smaller SMD components and therefore, it is very easy to screw things up. The most reliable method of soldering at this point is to depend on the reflow soldering method.

The other alternative would be to go back to normal hand soldering and using copious amount of flux. This method still works but I would still have to make sure every solder joint is accounted for and hence a lot of continuity testing. Furthermore, it is quite difficult to minimise any shorting since I have disposed of my illuminated magnifier.

Disaster struck when I plugged in the power adapter for the reflow hot plate. There was a crack sound at the mains socket. Opening it up was quite easy because the cyanoacrylate glue (aka superglue) has failed. It was easy to see that the plastic had become brittle holding the mains socket.
After rectifying the issue, the power adapter still failed to work and therefore, rather than risky shorting myself since these power supplies do store some very strong charge in their capacitors, I relegated it to the dustbin.
Int he end, I had to hand solder the circuit board and using the meter, test for every connection at the resistors to make sure it is OK/ But for the chip itself, which is about 10mm in length, I have no visual tools to assist me. Even my Xiaomi 14T Pro was useless at taking macro shots. In this image, it kind looked OK but I am not going to power it up yet.
